Rooff brings Granary back in to use

For some years the council together with partners in both the London Development Agency and latterly the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation has been working on the development of a Creative and Cultural Industries Quarter based around the Malthouse, Abbey Road, Barking. The first phase was complete when the Malthouse came under the management of Space, with both Arc Theatre and Studio 3 occupying Space.

The second phase was to bring the building next to it, known as the Granary, back into use.

And now, thanks to a new company into the borough that is about to happen. Rooff, an old established company, originally based in Newham and partly displaced by the Olympics, has bought the Granary and are working to turn it into a combination of a new head office and lettable space for commercial and creative industries. Their work is a combination of new build and restoration.

The first phase of the work was completed on 22nd October 2010 and was celebrated with a “topping out” ceremony. This was attended by the Borough Mayor, Steve Oakes of the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation and was hosted by the Managing Director of Rooff, Mark Horn.

Since purchasing the building from LTGDC in March this year, Rooff has made swift progress on site to achieve structural frame completion of the new extension and completion of major structural elements within the existing Granary building.

Restoration work has been progressing well to the Granary to preserve a fantastic piece of industrial architectural heritage.

Work is currently on programme to complete in early Summer 2011, when Rooff will be relocating to the building, as part of their continued investment in Barking & Dagenham.

The available 15,000 sq. ft of commercial / studio / cafe space is being marketed through property agents Glenny. (www.glenny.co.uk)
