Business of the Month

Business of the month is local DIY and trade superstore, N&C Building Materials, whose six acre premises are located on Freshwater Road, off Whalebone Lane. As a retailer they focus on providing not only an excellent customer service but by ensuring staff have thorough product knowledge and they aim to provide the customer with not only their product but a reason to use them again and again.

The company is also annual sponsor of Barking & Dagenham’s St George’s Day events and hosted their own St George’s Family Fun Day with free themed activities for all the family. The event was also an opportunity for N&C to raise donations for Children Today, a charity that provides specialised equipment for children and young people with disabilities helping them to reach their potential and lead an active childhood.

Sanofi site

Dagenham East – attractive large scale site combining bio-science and business

The Dagenham plant of the multi-national pharmaceutical manufacturer, Sanofi, has been
operating for 77 years.

Last year, the company won the prestigious Chemical Landmark Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) for “pioneering research and manufacturing carried out on the site”. Today the business employs around 500 staff. In November 2009 the company
announced it would end production and leave the 108 acre site in 2013. Following decades of success in the area, this award-winning company is working hard with the Council and other key stakeholders to leave a strong, sustainable employment legacy.

The site is opposite Dagenham East underground station and offers easy access to central London, significant vacant brownfield land, dry and wet laboratory space, sterile and temperature-controlled buildings, air handling systems, micro labs and associated offices. All these facilities would be prohibitively expensive to build from scratch, underlining the hugely attractive offer the area provides.

The site is ideally placed for development as a leading-edge science park for individual companies or a university or group of universities. Some existing lab buildings can be maximised through development into individual units for research, or as the base for start-up companies active in research and development, biotech and the pharmaceutical or bioscience sectors.
